H.E. Mr. László Havas, Permanent Representative of Hungary to the OECD and UNESCO reaffirmed Hungary’s commitment to multilateralism and alignment with the European Union in Hungary’s national statement during the 220th session of the UNESCO’s Executive Board. Ambassador Havas emphasized the increasing relevance of UNESCO’s peace-building mission, particularly amidst current global and regional conflicts. He also underscored the importance of avoiding politicization within UNESCO, advocating for trust and cooperation among Member States.
Highlighting Hungary's initiatives, he noted the nation's strong stance on safeguarding education from violence, and provided an update on the upcoming World Science Forum in Budapest, set to take place under UNESCO’s patronage. This event will gather key stakeholders to discuss science’s role in addressing global challenges. Additionally, he reaffirmed Hungary's dedication to the UN Sustainable Development Goals on water and its active role in UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme.
Ambassador Havas also acknowledged UNESCO's focus on gender equality and Hungary's support for women’s full, equal, and meaningful participation within the organization. As President of the EU Council, Hungary has promoted cultural heritage protection as essential tool for sustainable development and peace, with a vision to position culture as a core goal in the post-2030 Agenda.
He concluded by expressing Hungary’s strong support for UNESCO’s mission and its continued implementation worldwide.
