The Hungarian string band tradition and the Lipizzan horse breeding traditions have been added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which collects the knowledge of communities handed down from generation to generation on the basis of nominations from individual countries.
The inscription was decided by the Intergovernmental Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage at its seventeenth session, which is currently taking place in Rabat, Morocco. The Hungarian string band tradition was submitted by Hungary as a separate nomination, while the Lipizzan horse breeding traditions was jointly nominated by eight countries (Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia).
The representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity currently includes the following elements from Hungary: traditions of the Busó festivities at Mohács, Matyó embroidery, the multinational elements of falconry and craft of blue dye. In the Register of good safeguarding practices, the Táncház method and the Kodály method represent model conservation programmes.
